So, let’s talk today about reviews. Specifically, about things not to do in reviews. (In other words, some things that really boggle the mind.)
For some reason or another, I haven’t received a lot of reviews for my fic that I would call “troll reviews” or “flame reviews” (you know the ones, they start with, “You’re an effing idiot,” and just get more vituperative from there). In fact, as far as I can recall, I’ve received only two. One several years ago on a story I posted to FictionPress (Fanfiction.Net’s “original fiction” partner), wherein the reviewer abused me for not writing like Harlan Ellison. (Newsflash: No, I don’t write like him, because I am not him! In fact, I don’t particularly like his writing style, so I don’t even try to write like him!) And the other one was last Friday.
Now, this is not to say that I never receive negative reviews. I do. (Particularly on my short HP fic DisciplineIssues.) People don’t like my stories and feel the need to tell me, or they offer me a critique, or whatever – yes, I’ve got plenty of those. But most of the time, people are at least polite with their reviews to me, even if they don’t like the story. And I have a thick skin when it comes to critiques of my writing.
This person was nowhere near polite, which is part of the reason I’m venting about it here.
Warning: Foul language and lack of common sense below.
There’s been a lot of recent reminders to me both here (thank you, aya1412!) and on Fanfiction.net that people are still very interested in reading Rurouni Battōsai; so (despite the fact that I haven’t yet finished writing Chp. 5) here is Chp. 5 Pt. 1 for your reading pleasure.
Yes, I actually have a fic update for you! *pauses as everyone falls down anime-style* *shakes head*
Chapter 4 of RuroSen #1: A Strange Partnership (the Rurouni Kenshin/Sentinel crossover) will be posted after I hear back from my beta-readers and make any recommended changes (definitely within the next week and a half).
Chapter 4 Part 4 of Rurouni Battôsai/Edge of the Blade will definitely be posted before I leave for my rapid Christmas vacation on Dec. 22. (At present I don’t know how long before – it will depend on a couple of things, including whether I can get any more of Chp. 5 written. Hiko’s being an even worse pain in the arse than usual *sigh*.)
Here is the first of merula31‘s vignettes from the Fandom Meme. Unlike the other vignettes, this is actually part of a story I already have in progress, called Human Touch. I would be interested in opinions….
Please note that despite how it may appear, this is not slash/shōnen-ai; it is, at most, pre-shōnen-ai. And there are reasons behind the apparently OOC behaviour, some of which are in this bit….
 Gah! Bad tag0!
As with all tag0’s RK stories, this was beta-ed by the inestimable Vathara.[/edit]
And now, Chp. 2 of RuroSen: A Strange Partnership, in which Saitō and Kenshin have their first of many conversations (or should that be confrontations? *g*) about things, and we find out a bit about what Hiko has to do with things. Oh, and the Sentinel/Guide instincts continue to act… and Saitō experiences still more disturbing revelations. *EG*
Okay, finally fairly pleased with what I have written so far of RuroSen…. Sorry it’s taken so long! It’s been a busy week…. (Hope all my fellow Canadians are enjoying their Thanksgiving….)
Please note that this is a Rurouni Kenshin/The Sentinel crossover (Vathara’s Crossover Commando somehow found his way into my Plot Bunny Corral, and Saitō and Kenshin actually let him in). It is the first story in a series that will have at least one sequel, and a short prologue that I’m also working on….
Given that I’m over halfway through writing Chp. 4, I figured it was time to start posting Chp. 3…. (Note re RuroSen – I will try to review it next week to check that Chp. 1 is ready to post – it should be, but I just want to make sure.)
Good news for everyone enjoying my Rurouni Kenshin fics – I’m finally getting some more written! Thanks go to Vathara, who has been very patient waiting for me to send the updates for beta-ing, and whose latest effort (I won’t spoil the surprise – but will rec it as soon as it’s up!) has provided me with the inspiration to get out of the slump I’ve been in and actually get some work done…
Okay, I’m finally happy with the way Chapter 1 of Rurouni Battousai is turning out, so I am therefore posting the revised version of the prologue (including author’s notes again – more streamlined this time, however!). Some changes are large, others are much more subtle – but you will need to read this version before reading Chp. 1.
