#CampNaNoWriMo: April 2018 Update 1

So, I’m trying to post more frequently again. And it’s April. What is April known for? (Aside from Autism “Awareness” Acceptance Month, that is. That’s for tagÂûght.)

That’s right – the first session of Camp NaNoWriMo! (Which lately I seem to have mostly posted about in April of odd years.)

So this month, I’m once again going back to my NaNo roots and trying to finish the rewrite of Search and Rescue. I tried to work on it last year (unsuccessfully, though I think I wrote 4 pages or so?), and back in July of 2015, and didn’t do much then.

This year, I’m taking full advantage of Camp NaNo’s ability to choose your own target and type of target. I decided to go for 40 hours of editing and rewriting – and then changed that to 2,400 minutes (the same time length) because the “hour” type doesn’t allow for fractions. So the goal is 80 minutes a day to make my target.

My actual goal is, of course, to finish Chp. 8 and do the rewrites of Chps. 9 to 14, in order to actually finish the rewrite so I can start working on getting it into a publishable state.

So far, I’m at 199 minutes of editing and rewriting, and I think I’ve managed to get through some of my block on Chp. 8. I need 41 more minutes today to make my goal; going to see if I can’t exceed that.

Will probably update intermittently during the month – wish me luck!

Very Happy Birthday To Me! Plus SaR

Yes, it’s my birthday today. And I’ve had a wonderful one. My parents and I went out to the Classic Cafe East this morning for breakfast, then came home and I got my presents. {Hugs Mom & Dad!}

I then spent most of the rest of the morning and the beginning of the afternoon relaxing with Imber, and reading fanfic. (Specifically Vathara‘s story Embers, which though currently in progress [finally starting to near the end!], is a wonderful Avatar: TLA fic – especially for those who like Zuko, Iroh and Toph, and hard, realistic choices.) Then I went out to coffee with a friend, and finally came home and had dinner with my parents, my friend, and my brother, sister-in-law, and niece.

It was a really nice, quiet day, and I think it was exactly what I needed. So I’m both happy and content. (As well as tired. Didn’t sleep well last night due to writing high-induced insomnia.)

As well, for those who are interested, I managed to get a full 2 pages written on the re-write of Chapter 8 of Search and Rescue last night. I doubt I’ll write any tonight, but I’m back in writing mode! πŸ™‚

‘Later, all!

NaNoWriMo 2008: The Continuing Story

Remember, way back in November of 2008, I started NaNoWriMo for the first time, and finished an SF novel, Search and Rescue? And I think I said something somewhere about having to re-write it, because some of what happened was seriously impractical, and I had them going from tension-up-point to eating, to tension-up-point, to eating, etc.? (Or maybe I just said that to Vathara.)

Anyway… it took me three years (until last spring / summer; mid-May, I think) to finish the re-write of Chapter 5 (there are 14 chapters). Chapters 1-4 didn’t need much adjustment, and were already partly adjusted before NaNo ’08 ended.

So, between last mid-May and now, I’ve gotten to the beginning of Chapter 8 (which has a major event… well, the major event is at the end of Chapter 7, but 8 is where the two protagonists finally really start becoming friends). I haven’t done any writing on this since… December, I think? (Last fall and this past winter were seriously stressful.) Maybe September.

But, there was the first meeting of the Newfoundland Writers’ Group MeetUp today, and I got pumped by it. So I spent the rest of the afternoon (after everyone else left) and after dinner working in minor edits for Chps. 1-7, and I’m now working on getting farther in Chapter 8! Yay me! πŸ˜‰

Anyway, I am writing my original fic as well as fanfic again. (Which reminds me… does anyone want to see some stuff from my other unfinished fic, or would you rather wait until it’s finished?)

NaNo Novel Done!

Aside from the re-writes of Chps. 1-3 to mesh in with the change in plot (referred to in my last post), the rough draft of my NaNoWriMo 2008 novel is done! With the last word of Chp. 14 written, it clocks in at 103,009 words (which may change if I get the 1-3 rewrites finished before midnight tomorrow – but for now, that’s how long it is).

I feel very, very proud of myself right now. And I think I have very, very good reason to. Especially considering that at the beginning of the month, I wasn’t even sure I could make 50,000 words, much less actually finish a novel-length work in 30 days. But I did it.

And it’s a story that I like.

Yes, it needs some reasonably major editing, of course – but this rough block of marble has a definitely pleasing shape to it.

Three cheers for NaNoWriMo, Chris Baty, and the Toronto NaNo Community for all the support! And thanks as well to my family, best friends and LJ friends for the same support and encouragement – it did help, guys.

Yet More NaNo Milestones!

Well, I’ve passed a few milestones in the last few days. I really should have posted on Wednesday, when I made and passed 80,000 words, but I’m afraid I wasn’t feeling terribly well at the time.

However, I am now feeling much better, and have two more milestones to present!

First of all, my wordcount surpassed 90,000 words this afternoon. In fact, as of the moment, it is at 95,889 words.

Secondly, I have reached the end of Chapter 13 (my penultimate – second-last – chapter), and the beginning of the long-awaited climax! (The details of which I found out from my characters yesterday afternoon/evening. Don’t you just love characters that that keep you on your toes like that?)

So I have only one more chapter to write before Search & Rescue is finished (at least, if one doesn’t count the change-in-plot necessitated re-write of Chps. 1-3… which I have to admit, I sort of do), and it looks likely that I will finish it by tomorrow evening/night, with a total word count of over 100,000 words.

In case you hadn’t guessed, I’m ecstatic.

[Edit: And as of 2350 hrs., I now have the rather amusing word count total of 95,999 words.]

NaNo Official Winner!

Well, I am now an official winner of NaNoWriMo 2008.

*cheers self*

Off to sleep, then work on the rest of the novel (and at last I’m starting to approach the climax! Yay!).

NaNo Milestone #8 (or #7….)

Well, the Toronto NaNoWriMo Overnight writing session was a huge success. For me, certainly. I not only managed to get over 7,000 words written at the session itself (raising my word count to 70,000 words!), but got another 1,000+ words written after. With a result that yesterday’s word count was 3,710 words, and today’s was a whopping 8,723 words!

Total word count is at this point: 72,812 words.

Pleased as punch….

NaNo Week #3 Update

Well, I have reached 60,379 words for the end of Week #3 of NaNoWriMo. Doing fairly well, all told. I think I’m over half-way through the story – we’re starting to head towards the climax, at least – so my goal for the end of the month is now to get it finished. Here’s hoping Brendan and Ryuu don’t have any more huge surprises to spring on me….

Overnight writing session tomorrow (Saturday) night; I’m really looking forward to it!

NaNo Winner!

Hey, everyone, guess what? I’ve hit 50K! (50,019 words, as of the time of this post, actually. And there’ll be more before the end of the night.)

*Does Happy Victory Dance*

Now it’s just a matter of getting Brendan and Ryuu out of their current mess (which I didn’t even want to happen when they presented it to me this morning), through the next one, and to the climax before the end of the month. Considering what I’ve done so far, that shouldn’t be much of a problem. *G*

NaNo Week #2 Update

And it’s time for the Week #2 update on my NaNo Novel Status. Just like last week, this is also a “milestone” post, because I hit 40K words this evening! *cheering myself on* It was easier than expected, actually; I was aiming for 39K words today, then Brendan started talking about how he learned about disguises, and before I knew it I was at the milestone number!

Things are getting interesting now; once the two of them are safely in the spaceport, I have no idea what will happen next. Definitely looking forward to finding out – and knowing Brendan and Ryuu as I do by now, I have little doubt that they’ll be letting me know fairly quickly.

Week #2 Word Count: 40,570 words out of 50,000.

Doing really well.

NaNo Milestone #3 (or was it #4?)

Well, I hit another NaNoWriMo milestone today – 30,000 words. I’m now at 31,185 words total… and the plot lead-in has changed on me. Not entirely unexpectedly (I’ve been suspecting something’s up for the last few days), but it means that rewrites are going to have to happen on the first three chapters (possibly in December – or earlier, if I make my daily quota early in the day). Luckily I can keep most of the basics, it’s just the details that are going to have to change.

Why oh why are characters so willful?

(Yes, Ryuu, I know it will make a better – not to mention more plausible – story. And yes, Brendan, I know that it means you don’t have to come over the ogre in the first bit. *sigh* Characters. Can’t live with ’em, can’t live without ’em.)

NaNo: Halfway Mark

I have officially passed the halfway word count mark (and got cheered by all the fellow Toronto NaNoers who were participating in the subway writing session this afternoon – that was fun!). I’m now at 26.5K words. Over 53 percent done. In 30 percent of the time allotted. I’d say I’m doing really well for a newbie.

Of course, Brightspot has practically taken over all of Chp. 4 written so far (thus the not-usual NaNo User Pic); if this keeps up, she’s going to become as major a character as my protagonists. This wouldn’t be terribly bad… if it weren’t for the fact that I wasn’t expecting her to come in until the (possible) sequel….

Anyway, I’m having a great time with this, both the writing itself and the social aspect. (And the competition doesn’t hurt – I’m on the Word War team and we are beating Vancouver….)

Later, all!

NaNo Week #1 Update

Well, as promised, here is the week one update on my NaNoWriMo progress. It’s also a “milestone” post, because as of tonight I am over 20K words! More than 2/5 done!

A smidgen over, at least.

Week #1 Word Count: 20,244 words out of 50,000.

I’m doing well. *delighted grin*

Well, the NaNoWriMo widgets (mentioned in my original NaNo post) still seem to not be working right (load on the servers doesn’t appear to be reducing much – or else they just need to have minimum load in order to work). So if you’re curious about what my novel’s about, to read an excerpt from Chp. 1, and/or take a gander at my word count, head on over to my NaNoWriMo Profile Page!

NaNoWriMo ’08 Progress

I know I said I’d post my word count once a week, but I think reaching certain milestones on the way to 50K deserves an additional mention.

I have reached 10K words as of about 15 minutes ago. Yay me! 1/5 done with the word count goal!

(The actual novel’s going to be longer, but the NaNo 50K goal is the first step.)

Later, all!

NaNoWriMo Begins!

Well, it’s now officially November here in Toronto, and NaNoWriMo has begun.

Not doing any writing just yet, however – I’m heading to bed. Need a good night’s sleep so I can get a firm start on the novel in the morning.

NaNoWriMo 2008 Doth Approach

Well, I’m participating in the National Novel Writing Month this year. I’m writing an original SF novel currently titled Search & Rescue. I’ve set up a page on my website to track my progress (though the widgets are currently down – server overload on the NaNo server, I suspect).

I’ll also be posting my weekly word counts here.

Feel free to visit and wish me luck!
